Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

The class teacher is Miss Vella Taylor and the teaching assistants are Mrs Ras,  Mrs S Estes Patel and Mrs Dent.

  • In Year 1, children continue their Phonics learning using Jolly Phonics, building on the foundations from Reception. They focus on learning alternative spellings of the 42 sounds, which helps them to read and spell a wider range of words with increasing accuracy. They also keep practising non-decodable tricky words (such as was and said), so that they can read more fluently and write with greater independence. Daily phonics sessions keep learning active and engaging, supporting children to grow in confidence as readers and writers.

Please read with your child every day. This may include listening to them read their decodable book, or sharing their chosen book together. Ideally, your child should read their decodable book three times across the week to reinforce phonics and comprehension. Reading records will be checked each morning, and children who have read at home the previous day will receive a Dojo point.
